I left Elephant Butte state Park about 9:30 this morning and got to the Walmart in Alamogordo New Mexico a little before lunch. I'll spend the night here and in the morning head for Hobbs New Mexico where I plan on turning south and going down to I-10.
I don't think I've ever been to Hobbs before and I know I've never been on the roads heading south out of Hobbs. I'm only going that way to avoid the notorious 285 heading south out of Carlsbad which is infamous for its poor condition and horrendous safety record attributed to the oil workers and oil tankers that seem to be the major users of that road.
My concern is that I know the whole area around Artesia New Mexico and South is all oilfields. So I'm afraid that Hobbs especially heading South may have the same problem that plagues 285, so I could be trading the devil I know, for the devil I don't know, I guess I will find out tomorrow.
My boondocking spot in the back of the Alamogordo New Mexico Walmart parking lot. It appears that the Walmart employees all park back here behind the store.
My view of the mountains from the Walmart parking lot.
