back at Walmart again. It's my favorite store, why not live here?

A skiff of snow in the high country.

I left the San Luis Lake wildlife area at about ten this morning and stayed at the Walmart in Salida again. A few Sandhill Cranes were flying around where I was camped, so I took a few pictures of the Cranes, which got me off to a late start of easing on down the road to Buena Vista. But I did a little shopping at Walmart, and by then, the winds had picked up a little; my laziness kicked in, and I decided to stay here for the night.

I had a great time on my mini-vacation because I was living much like I live when traveling in the winter. I had basic ideas of where I wanted to go, like the open house at the Roundhouse in Como and finding some Sandhill Cranes migrating through Monte Vista. And just like on my winter travels, I didn't care much about when or where any of that happened; I just wanted to enjoy myself and take some snapshots.

I got really lucky with the cold front that came through because of all the clouds it brought, which put some interest back in picture-taking for me. People with a talent for taking pictures can get nice images from a clear blue sky around lunchtime when the lighting is normally terrible, but I've never had much luck doing that. I need lots of clouds, preferably during sunrise or right before sunset, and with that kind of lighting, even I can sometimes take a decent picture.

The time for me to leave on my winter travels is fast approaching. Now, I do not know when I will leave or even where I will go. But whenever it is... It's fast approaching. I'm pretty sure it will be sometime in October because it can get pretty chilly in Denver later this month, so I will have to use a lot of propane to stay warm, which I would prefer not to do. But the exact time of my leaving is so tightly held that I can't tell myself until the morning of my departure. Because if I told myself when I would leave, I would write about it in my blog, and then it would no longer be a secret.
