Looking over the latest weather report, I've decided not to leave the Pima County Fairgrounds for a brief side trip to Wilcox, Arizona, to search for the large and often deadly Sandhill Cranes.

I know there's a rumor that I live in mortal terror of the treacherous and deadly Sandhill Crane's enormous razor-sharp beaks, but I can assure you there is no truth whatsoever to that vicious rumor... Instead, it's their exceedingly long legs and clawed feet that strike fear into the hearts of anyone that sees them.... and that's what gives me nightmares.

There is fear that keeps me from going to Wilcox next week, but it has very little to do with being beaked to death or slashed with cruel claws; it's mostly to do with the weather.

The latest weather forecasts show that both here in Tucson and Wilcox, about 80 miles away, the weather will be mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of rain the whole time I would be in Wilcox. The winds were sometimes over 20 mph, which doesn't concern me while driving to Wilcox, but it certainly doesn't make boondocking or picture taking any easier. Also the roads I would be driving on are dirt, or more accurately mud, and that didn't sound like too much fun either.

My next opportunity to take a side trip to Wilcox will be January third, when it will be five days before the first January event, which will be barrel racing and a gun show. And if I can't go then, the rest of January will be events happening about twice a week for the rest of the month.

Fortunately, the Sandhill Cranes are in the Wilcox area until about March, so if I can't make a side trip to see them in January, I have them on my mental list of places to go, and things to do, when I leave Tucson, probably early February.

It's been rainy and cloudy the last few days, and is expected to continue about the same. But despite the problems with that, it sure has made for some powerful sunsets and sunrises.

A couple of Tombstone's seasoned citizens in the process of solving the world's problems. I would humbly suggest that they both need a shave and a haircut, but that would be somewhat hypocritical on my part sense they both look substantially better than I do.

Thank you Barney, your very kind, and obviously in need of new glasses.

Sorry to hear you won't be heading South Barney, but I don't blame you, I also think getting too close to the border is kind of sketchy now days. I skipped over Yuma, and Ajo, which are both places I enjoy spending time because of the border situation, and I probably would've skipped over Tombstone also, since they've had a few border problems but I was so anxious to see the new boondocking RV Park right in town that I went anyway.

But I hope you can find someplace to go because my experience is the longer I stay someplace the more difficult it is to leave, and the older I get the more that seems to be the case.

I figure one day I will wake up in the morning, and while I'm drinking my cup of coffee it will occur to me that I've only been to two places that year.... And without even realizing it.... I've become a Snowbird.

You are already a snowbird since you spend the whole summer in Denver then the whole winter south. At least, that's my definition of snowbird. I moved around a lot in the winter when I was escaping the snow in Minnesota but escaping that snow is what I feel made me a snowbird.

As usual there's normally several definitions for almost anything and especially boondocking. I've seen dozens of definitions for boondocking, and there's always plenty of back-and-forth on whose definition is right, but I don't worry about other people's definitions of boondocking because I know mine is the correct one.

Snowbird is the same way. When I lived in Miami Florida it was full of what was always called "Snowbirds." They lived in New York City in the summer, and Miami Florida in the winter. And they drove or flew north or south depending on the season, to apartments where they lived, usually on Miami Beach, South Beach in particular, which back in the day was packed with small inexpensive apartment buildings all built in the Art Deco style that catered to these folks.

But since I was always into camping and RVs I usually defined Snowbirds as folks that weren't necessarily RVers they simply used an RV as transportation to the place they lived in the South and the place they lived up North, and the RV became a place to live when they got there. But they weren't necessarily RVers like we would define RVers.

But by my definition what happens if a New Yorker leaves their RV Park in South Texas and spends two weeks at the big show in Q? Would that remove them from a list of Snowbirds? And if two weeks away from their RV Park wouldn't remove them from a Snowbird list, would a month? Or three months?.... Nobody knows.

So I don't pay much attention to definitions, it gets too complicated, especially since I'm sitting here at a full hookup campsite, at arguably the largest campground in Arizona, still calling myself a boondocker.... Like my dad always said, "I don't care what you call me, as long as you call me on payday and at dinnertime."
