No roots

I got to thinking the other day that when you're a fulltimer, you don't have any roots anymore. Snowbirds sort of have roots. They have roots where they live up north in the summer and roots in an RV Park or two where they spend the winter, and that's about as close as it gets to full-timers having any roots.

But for full-timers like me, I don't have roots anymore. Yes, I spend all summer in Denver with my family, but I don't have any roots in Denver. If my family moved to another state, I would go there; my loyalty and attachment are to my family, not to where they live.

I guess that's normal for me not to have roots since my dad spent most of his life in the Air Force. We moved wherever he was stationed, so I didn't grow up with roots. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing; it just meant that I grew up not having a long-term home. So now, living on the road seems pretty normal and reminds me of this song that I used to like many years ago called "No Roots."


I got to thinking a while back about the machine gun shoot I went to a couple of years ago up in northern Arizona called the Big Sandy Shoot. They have two shoots a year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall, and it seemed to me that the Spring shoot was sometime in March, so I looked it up on the Internet, and yes, it was about the middle of March, but it was canceled this Spring due to flooding in the dry washes.

Now, dry washes flood; that's no big deal; they do it all the time. But usually, it takes a day or so. Everything's fine, and you go back to normal. But, to have the washes in the area flood so often and to such a degree that it doesn't return to normal in a couple of days is strange for the Arizona desert. And I believe that dry washes that have water in them all the time, in most places are called rivers; which is a whole different animal than a dry wash.

I don't get the purpose of this at all. If you recall all the hassles I had with the little Bronco camper, and putting the top up and down, this concept carries that little bit of a hassle I had with the little Bronco to the extreme.

Can you imagine taking everything out of this pop-up tent, disassembling the tent, and packing everything  up just to run to the store for 15 minutes... And then coming back and setting it all up again.... in the rain!

What it does is basically keep you from ever using your truck until it's time for you to go someplace else. I can't imagine anybody wanting to pack and unpack this mess just to go to a movie, a Museum, or a restaurant. But that's just me.

This is why didn't get any good airplane pictures at Ajo. I took this picture with an 800 mm lens, which is the biggest one I own and this is as big as the lens made the plane look.

All the planes were flying so high I couldn't even see a spec where the plane was, but every once in a while the atmosphere would be right and the planes would make a contrail, so I just took a picture of the end of the contrail and this plane showed up even though I saw nothing with my eyes. I guess they were doing high-altitude bombing practice the whole time I was there.
