A continuation from yesterday

Continuing from yesterday. Teenagers daydream; it's just about the only thing teenagers can afford to do since it's free. And I had plenty of daydreams when I was growing up.

My first problem was money, or the lack thereof, and there was nothing that could be done about that because that would require work on my part, and even though work was not totally alien to me at the time, I knew enough to know that it wasn't any fun and couldn't imagine why adults did it all the time. So I skipped over the money problem and went straight to transportation.

My dad had an old Cushman Eagle scooter that he would use to  putt around on base, and I decided to turn it into a fishing machine that would carry me to all the local fishing hot spots and maybe even carry all the fish I caught back home.

I had a learner's permit from South Carolina that would allow me to operate a vehicle of less than five horsepower on the roads, and the Cushman Eagle just fit that bill. My dad somehow managed to turn that learners permit into a Florida license that would allow me to ride the Cushman on the base and drive that scooter fishing. Which partially solved my personal transportation problems.

 Now you may ask how all of that relates to my central theme of "Who reads magazines anymore?" and it's because riding that scooter got me buying every motorcycle magazine I could lay my hands on so I could find a way to get off that embarrassingly ugly Cushman Eagle scooter, even though my only marketable skill was begging my parents for money.

But enough about Miami. Tomorrow I will jump from magazines about the joys of fishing and skin diving in South Florida to going into the Air Force and the sudden change of magazines that tempted every teenage recruit in the late 60s in any branch of the service...just mentioning GIs and magazines in the same sentence should allow you to easily guess what magazines I'm talking about.

Then in early 1965, with the income I was receiving from my after school job at the Hunter Jumper boarding stable's as an equine sanitation engineer. I was able to buy this brand-new shiny BSA. A considerable step up from my lowly Cushman. This BSA was a bike that would literally go faster in first gear and the Cushman would at top speed.... it's a wonder I didn't kill myself.
