A new place to camp

I can't believe how fortunate I am.

I went roaming around just before sunset today, and took a few pictures of the sun going down. There wasn't anything spectacular going on which is often the case with a mountain sunset, when you're too close to the mountains the sun disappears behind the mountains before it disappears behind the earth and the sunsets and sunrises aren't all that great unless you happen to be lucky enough to be in just the right position.... I was in position, but not the right one.

I stuck with my previous plan of getting up early to get some different lighting in my snapshots and have found that getting up about sunrise, AND walking up and down a few hills at 10,000 feet don't go together. I can either sleep late and walk around at this altitude, or get up early and keep my walking to a minimum. But it's just too tiring to do both, so I found myself almost falling asleep a little after eight o'clock last night.

I remember long ago at an age that's far, far, away when I used to hunt the mighty Elk. I would be up and in the woods by daybreak, spend all day walking around at 10,000 feet, or higher, get up and do it all again the next day. It looks like those days are but a distant memory, but fortunately so is my desire to do things like that anymore.

Tonight is my last night of reservations at my current campground at the Park, so I'll be heading elsewhere in the morning. I have a reservation at another campground just down the road, which will actually be better than where I'm at now because there's less shade there so if the sun does happen to come out, I can get some solar charging.

This is my new campground. It's a lot more open, so I've got a chance at catching some sunshine if there happens to be any, which at the moment doesn't look very likely.

My new campsite at Rocky Mountain National Park. This place used to be shaded like the campground I was just at, but the pine beetles killed most of the trees so they had to be cut down.... There are tree stumps everywhere.

If you're looking for a little extra adventure, and have a four-wheel-drive. You can take this single lane, 100 Year old dirt road up the pass. This road was built long before they invented things like guardrails, and pavement in the mountains. I always preferred driving on dirt roads instead of pavement, when it was snowing .
