A fine autumn morning at the Bosque. The weathers chilly, the birds are flying, and I'm boondocked in a pecan grove, life doesn't get any better.

I was just going to show pictures of the autumn leaves in this blog post, but these birds flew by and Photo Bombed my shot...Danged Birds

It's a beautiful day today, if anything, a little hot; it got up to almost 80° today, and considering last night was in the mid-30s, that's a pretty big change for an old geezer that gets too hot or too cold with the slightest temperature change. So I do what Colorado folks always do: I walk outside in the morning wearing my Eskimo clothes, and by lunch, I'm in a T-shirt.

I'm having a good time here; I'm sure it would be boring for most normal folks, but when you're old and geezerly, walking around a lake and taking pictures of birds is just about all the mental and physical strain I can manage.

As usual, for me, time is flying by, so I must be having a good time. I still haven't managed to get up in time to get to the Bosque before the sun comes up to watch the snow goose lift-off at dawn. I want to do that, but it's just so darn cold at daybreak I dread even thinking about it. It's a great picture to get, and I don't know if I could get that picture anywhere else, or at least not where I would ever be.

Every morning before the sun comes up, one of my eyes will slowly creep open just enough to see my wristwatch, and I will have to decide if I've got time to get up, get dressed, and get to the Bosque before the geese leave. And every morning, the same thing happens.... I see the outside thermometer that says 34°, and I quietly whisper to myself, ''I've got plenty of time; I'll do it tomorrow.''

Three Javelina crossed the road while I was taking pictures of birds. I guess they felt ignored and got jealous since bird pictures rule the roost around here.

I think an African Elephant could amble across the road In the Bosque, and no one would pay any attention to it in less it was blocking their view of a Sandhill Crane.

More birds in the way of my Fall pictures.... Danged birds again.

Around here there are several lakes and lots of irrigation ditches.

One of the lakes. These lakes are made for waterfowl, There shallow, with lots of little islands, perfect for various migrating critters to find an area they enjoy. During the dry season the local farmers plant seed crops in the Bosque, and don't harvest them... They leave it all for the birds.

Looks like a happy haven for you. I don't see any people out and about. Are you just not including them, or is it really so uncrowded? All baby things are cute, even baby javelinas. I guess that's their job....otherwise, there wouldn't be any baby anythings. (Now there's a cynical thought.) OK. Glad life is going well for you!!!

Thank you, Judith. There are not many people here. I tend to do things in the off-season because it's less crowded, and I have less problems finding places to stay, and that includes boondocking places.... that's one of my secrets that's not so secret, stay away from places when everybody wants to go there.

You may notice that I live the entire winter without making a reservation for a place to stay, unless it's something special like the balloon rally in Gallup or the Lost Dutchman State Park which is always full. I just stay away from places, and times when everybody else wants to be there. I guess you could say I'm a contrarian when it comes to finding places to stay.

And, of course, it helps a lot to be a boondocker. 95% of the people can't live off-grid for more than a week without becoming very uncomfortable. But I've set up the Lance to be a full-time boondocking home and keep me comfortable, as long as I get some sun every few days. And by being able to do that, I'm free to come and go as I please and not have to be at the mercy of RV Park owners.

And when everybody else wants to be somewhere like a holiday, I get there several days early, hunker down, and boondock till the holidays over, which you will see me do thisThanksgiving.

So right now most folks don't want to be at the Bosque because not all of the birds are here yet. But it doesn't matter to me if there's 2000 Sandhill cranes here, or 1000, there's still enough for me to take a picture of.

Yeah, a baby anything is cute. And so are young Javelina. But they're kind of dangerous if they think you're messing with them. So when they were running around near me I made sure I could get into the camper before they could. But there was no need, they were doing what they needed to do, and I just continued taking pictures.

Your boondocking pics are really hitting hard on me but I do get to get rolling on Nov 15, Yehawwwwww, That is going to feel so good it is ridiculous.

That's great, Barney, you've hung around there a long time, and I know it's hard to get out of a rut once you get in it. But once you crank up the truck and head on down the road you'll start feeling the highway calling again and the desire for new places and new faces will come back again.

So come on! The roads calling your name, get on the road and don't look back.... There's nothing back there but the rut.
