My campsite for the next two nights. I stayed at this State Park before when I came to Texas, and really liked it.
As I was leaving Padre island this morning I could see in my rearview mirrors they were having a beautiful sunrise ... Just my luck.
I didn't go very far and ended up paying for two nights of camping at Corpus Christi state Park which is only about 70 miles from Padre island. The main reason I left early this morning was to avoid the big city traffic nightmare that I faced while driving to Padre island, and I've learned that the best time to get through any city, with as little stress as possible, is do it early on a Sunday morning, and this Sunday morning was great, no traffic at all and I cruised through town with nary a white knuckle.
I enjoyed my stay at Padre island this time mostly because the weather was so much better than the last time I was there. And last night while looking at the upcoming weather report for the area I definitely considered re-upping for another week, but apparently I can only take so much sand and rust before I need to get back to reality. For some reason staying on the beach feels like a vacation to me not like normal life, so it's enjoyable, but I couldn't live that way, and I think two weeks is about my limit. The people I met were all great, the Padre Balli campground I stayed at, though rundown, was perfectly comfortable to me. And you can't beat the scenery.
There was a couple of other places I was thinking of going this morning such as Del Rio Texas, and maybe down to the Big Bend area but being that close to the border at this point in time has me a little spooked. Not so spooked that I absolutely would not go there, but spooked enough that seeing as how there was no compelling reason to be there I just didn't feel like taking the chance. I'll still be near the border in southern New Mexico, and Arizona, but I won't be ON the border like Del Rio is.
So I'll slowly make my way West and spend the coldest months of the winter in southern Arizona. It may not always be warm, but it is most of the time and when its not it doesn't last long ..... not counting last winter.
There's some very nice homes around the lake. I guess that's normal because lakefront property is pretty expensive.
