Haven't heard something like that since I heard Puff the Magic Dragon going off one night a long ways away. That was a LONG time ago, but that memory is still clear as a bell. Some things just stay with you.

Shortly before I got stationed in Japan the AC- 47's were stationed at Nha Trang airbase so I never even got to see one of them. The closest I got was flying in and out of Cam Ranh bay Air Force Base every once in a while.

Yeah, some sounds are pretty much unforgettable. Fortunately as an Air Force brat I lived on a lot of Air Force bases as a kid, and those Hueys were often flying around but they were doing good things so I never had any bad feelings about that Whop, Whop, Whop sound.

Puffs working out when I was with the 101st Airmobile in I Corp was a frequent night time entertainment for us infantry guys trying to sleep in the jungle. It was sight and sound I would never forget. Checking out the target zone the next day was also impressive.

Yeah Barney, you were in a bad place, at a bad time, and was lucky to have it turn out as well as it did. As for me like I've said in the past.... The most dangerous place I was in was the NCO club on payday night.
