Doing absolutely nothing

Not much is going on today. I cleared my calendar for the day and spent my time relaxing and enjoying the thought of doing absolutely nothing. Not many people have the ability, or the desire, to do absolutely nothing, but I consider it essential for my physical and mental health.

If you spend a lot of time doing things that you have to do, it not only wears you out mentally, but it causes stress, and the stress causes all kinds of serious physical problems.

And if you're always doing things physically, particularly repetitious things, that can cause physical problems, especially a lot of the joint replacements old folks are getting nowadays.

So like everything else in life, moderation is the key to success. And moderating the physical and mental things going on in your life includes taking time off and doing absolutely nothing.

For some lazy people like myself, doing absolutely nothing comes easy and is a big part of our lives. But far too many folks find doing absolutely nothing is a goal almost impossible to attain.

Decades of work, slaving at a job controlled mainly by others, having schedules, meeting goals, dealing with deadlines, leave some retired folks without the ability, and far worse, even the desire to sit back, relax, and do absolutely nothing.

Some folks believe that participating in the hobby they enjoy is the same as relaxing and doing nothing... But it's not. Hobbies are primarily a way to forget about your job for a few hours and concentrate on something you like to do. But you can spend just as much mental and physical effort on a hobby as you do on a job, so it's not very relaxing. Yes, it takes your mind off your job for a few hours, but it doesn't replace doing absolutely nothing.

So if you want to live a life of moderation, there has to be time spent relaxing and doing absolutely nothing; it's a sure way to nip mental and physical problems in the bud. So embrace the laziness, except the apathetic, and love the loafing, it works for the old Boondork, and it can work for you.
