Elephant Butte state Park

An easy drive this morning from the City of Rocks, New Mexico, to Elephant Butte State Park, New Mexico. It's only about 120 miles, so it was no problem even for someone like me who doesn't like to drive very far in a day.

I planned to stop at Caballo State Park, ka - buy - yo if you don't happen to know the Spanish word for horse, since I had to drive right past it on my way to Elephant Butte. But the desire to order a part from Amazon to fix my refrigerator was very strong and overpowered my hope to spend a few nights somewhere before I went to Elephant Butte.

So I ordered a refrigerator propane burner as soon as I arrived, so it should be delivered on the fourth. Unfortunately, they won't accept any packages here at the Park office, so I'm having it sent "General Delivery" to the town of Elephant Butte's post office. And by the way, there is an actual town named Elephant Butte right outside the Elephant Butte State Park. But for the sake of brevity, when I refer to Elephant Butte, I will mean the Park and not the town.

My experience with General Delivery in the past has been iffy, but the campground host told me that the UPS store in town would take the delivery but would charge me 5 or $10 to hand it to me. I wouldn't say I liked the thought of that; as far as I can tell, there are no Amazon delivery lockers in town, so it looks like General Delivery at the post office, was my best option.

Since my refrigerator running on propane wouldn't keep the temperature in the reefer cold enough to keep my food safe to eat, I paid four dollars for an electric site at Elephant Butte State Park until I could fix my refrigerator. I plugged my refrigerator into electricity when I got here, and about three hours later, running on electricity, the freezer was at 0°, and the box was 42° and dropping. So at least I know there's no problem with the refrigeration unit because that got cold quickly especially considering its 85° outside.

These California seagulls are not the brightest birds on the branch. This one apparently left a California beach heading for the Gulf of Mexico, and thought Elephant Butte reservoir was the Gulf.

He probably figured out by now that he made a mistake but it was a fortunate mistake because now his taxes are lower, there's not a bunch of homeless bums living on the beach... Except for me of course. And it's legal to carry a concealed weapon, but its pretty hard to conceal a gun on a Seagull so I'm not sure that does him any good.
