Another beautiful day today, it was a little breezy in the morning but that went away before lunch and became just about perfect.
It's been such a wet winter in Arizona that weeds and bushes are growing everywhere and everything is so green it looks like springtime already. This gives me some hope that there might be another Super Bloom of flowers in the spring that will give me some more picture taking opportunities.
I'm still looking forward to the Cowboys pouring into town this weekend for their annual Winter Range competition. The campgrounds should be mostly full and even though I don't like crowds, it's only for a week and these are some pretty interesting people to be around. Unfortunately rain is forecast for Saturday and the dirt roads through the campground particularly the boondocking areas which don't get as much maintenance as the full hookup sites can get pretty muddy. But this is the Sonoran Desert so it will dry out pretty quick.
I went for a walk in some nearby hills this morning but didn't get to the top of anything partially due to a lack of ambition on my part, but mostly due to Cactus blocking the way. I don't mind weaving through a bunch of Saguaro's, or even low-lying Barrel Cactus but I learned long ago if you try to squeeze between a bunch of Jumping Cholla your going to come out of the desert looking like a pincushion. And it seems like halfway up the hills around here herds of Cholla grows making life miserable for both man and beast.
it was easy walking up the hill to this point because it was mostly open ground with just a few weeds, in fact what you see in front of me was mostly what was behind me. I could see there was a bunch of Cholla up ahead that ran mostly around the hill but from this distance it looked like I could make my way through them pretty easy.....I was wrong.
As I got closer to the Cholla I could see they were a lot denser than they looked from a distance and I didn't see an easy ways of making it through without taking a few of them home with me.
I walked around the side of the hill a ways and saw this little clearing and it looked like a way I could get through the Cholla but hidden in the bushes up ahead was more Cholla that I couldn't get through.
So at this point the amount of Chollas I was facing caused me to wimp out, turn around and walk back down to the truck. But I enjoyed the walk, I got to see some pretty scenery, take a few pictures, and pull some cactus spines out of my boots when I got home.
