Forever is a long time

The desert rains pour from the clouds in quantities large enough to soak the entire desert. But the desert rains are cruel, they lull you into believing there's enough water for everyone and everything to drink their fill, but it's a joke, a hoax, a heartless trick. You can see it, you can even smell it, but it never hits the ground. All you get is the cool air sinking down as the rain evaporates in the sky just out of your reach.

Today has been warm but windy, I guess a front is going through, but other than some clouds yesterday it's mostly just been a wind event.

I still haven't figured out where I'm going to go when I leave here, but I've got plenty of time to think about it because it looks like it's going to be windy for the next couple of days and I don't like to drive in the wind if I can help it... Unless of course, it's a tailwind and then it's wonderful, but how can I catch a tailwind if I don't know what direction I'm heading?

Whenever the weather is not conducive to getting outside and doing much of anything, it makes me wonder how well I would do living in a tiny little space similar to a van. I can see from the vans around me that van folks tend to spend a lot of time outside. I've noticed a lot of them now have awnings and they will put a mat down under the awning along with a couple of tables to hold a grill and other stuff that they probably want to get out of the way inside the van.

But I'm not a sitting outside kind of person. I like to be outside if I'm doing something outside, but I've never cared for being outside just to be there. Which explains why I may be the only RVer in the world that doesn't own a lawn chair.

I think it's maybe because most of the jobs I've had were outside kind of jobs. Most of my hobbies were outside kind of hobbies. And the places I've lived were quite often places where folks went on vacation because of the natural beauty of the scenery, and since I got to see and be out in that scenery every day, sitting in a lawn chair outside my front door now days, just doesn't seem all that interesting to me. So reclining in my easy chair in the living room wherever the Arctic Fox happens to be boondocked, is more comfortable to me than sitting outside, in the heat, the cold, the bugs, the wind, and the dust.

Now like I've said before in previous blogs, I have spent longish periods of time camping in a very spartan van, in a Hallmark pop-up slide-in truck camper, and most recently in my little Bronco pop-up camper albeit for short periods of time. But I've never actually had to live in a camper that small.

Now one thing I've got going for me, is I live alone. Most folks I see "living" in vans and other small campers are a couple, and I always wonder how they get along living that close together every... single.... day... Month after month, year after year. Anyone that can do that, is a better man than I.

So I know I can live in a small camper for a month, but I don't know if I can do it forever... Forever is a long time, and life's too short to be miserable for any more of it than you absolutely have to.
