Well, it's official. Comparing a picture I took of the crowds on the Elephant Butte beach during the Easter holiday in 2019, and comparing it to a photo I took yesterday, it appears to me there were  more people here this weekend than during the Easter holiday two years ago. What that means, I don't know.

This is my belated response to Larry's comment on yesterday's blog post.

I believe that most businesses will do what makes the most profit for the company. So the Zoom calls and working from home will only go as far as the bottom-line results. If a business determines that getting rid of a bunch of office space and letting people work from home will lead to higher profits, then that's what they will do. But if the lack of personal contact is in some way affecting the bottom line in a detrimental way, then I believe the Zoom calls will Zoom right into the trashcan as soon as government mandates are removed.

Coming from the small mountain town of Woodland Park, Colorado, I always tried to shop locally if at all possible because I knew what a struggle it was to keep a small business profitable. But after I used Amazon a few times, I realized that this way of shopping was life-changing in just about every way.

I didn't have to wait to drive 70 miles to a big city to buy a hard-to-find item anymore because it was for sale on Amazon cheaper than in the store, and the only downside is I had to wait for a couple of days for it to show up. But now that I'm spending my summers in Denver and Amazon has a warehouse in Denver, sometimes I get my item the same day I ordered it. The logistics in accomplishing that are unimaginable.

But the point is, how can anyone not shop at Amazon? No matter how much we want to support the local businesses, Amazon has EVERYTHING, and it's cheaper, they deliver it to my door, and they have an excellent return policy; how can anyone not shop there?  I think mainly what the Bat flu did was expose even more people to the benefits of Amazon before they were entirely ready to accept it.

A long time ago, I used to look at Sears and Roebucks department stores, which at the time were the largest property owners in America, and think how in the world can a store compete with a leviathan like Sears and Roebucks... Then Walmart opened up.... More recently, I would look at Walmart and say to myself, how could any store compete with an immense store like Walmart.... Then Amazon started doing what it does best. So is Amazon the best there is? Yes, until something better replaces it.

I live on the Internet. If it wasn't for the Internet, I don't know what I would do with all my free time. So the Internet means a lot to me. And from what I understand, Starlink doesn't have the proper licensing from the FCC for platforms that change locations like an RV. This problem could be rectified, but at this point, RVs are such a tiny part of their potential market share it might not be worth the effort for some time to come.

Maybe I should take the more interesting comments and turn them into a blog post.....Hmmm, that's not a bad idea, and as lazy as I am in no time at all, I could have folks writing this blog for me, and all I would have to do is take pictures.

These guys have a great side hustle going on. They bought these relatively inexpensive, humongous military surplus trucks, that can drive through the deepest sand like it's not even there. And they charge people, people like me that are worried about getting stuck in the sand, to take their RVs, and boats, down to the beach, and Sunday afternoon take them back out again. I don't know how many RVs they towed in and out  this weekend but they drove back and forth past me many times.

And when they're not towing RVs down to the beach, their parked on the beach waiting to tow the folks that get stuck in the sand.

As a small businessman myself I love it when somebody sees a need, finds a way to fill that need, and makes a few bucks in the process... Capitalism at its finest.

Elephant Butte State Park is a very large park. So it takes more than one Elephant to be the Elephant Butte Elephant,  it's a big job, so these are big elephants.
