Good news from Storrie Lake state Park, New Mexico

The weather's been beautiful this last week, come to think of it, it's been pretty nice since I got here. Low 80s in the daytime, low 60s at night, humidity in the teens, other than a couple of windy days, I don't know how It could be any better.

My two weeks of boondocking here at Elephant Butte State Park will be up next Tuesday. My time here is just flying by. I wish the tough times I've had in my life went by this quick, but they always seem to drag on forever.

The Park Ranger at Storrie Lake State Park in Las Vegas, New Mexico, returned my call today, and answered a few questions I had about staying there next week.

 The New Mexico State Park website for Storrie Lake said that their brand-new sewer dump station was closed due to the Bat flu, which I found somewhat confusing since the sewer dump area usually doesn't attract a big crowd, it's outdoors, some people wore a mask even before the Bat flu came along, and if you get anything on you, you don't have to be reminded to wash your hands. So closing the sewer dump station didn't make any sense, which of course, is why it wasn't true; the Ranger said it was open and working perfectly.

And I wanted to know if the boondocking areas were open, they call it dry camping, and if it is, did I need a reservation. The Ranger assured me that all the boondocking areas are available and require no reservation.

Well, that's just what I wanted to hear. Since there's a lot of boondocking available at Storrie Lake, and even in the summer, I've never seen all the boondocking areas full. That took some stress off me not having to deal with reservations and schedules. Now I can leave here when I feel like it and get there when I get there.

In the past, Storrie Lake has always worked out really well for me to be my last big stop before getting to Denver. It has good boondocking, so I can arrive whenever I want, and leave whenever I need to. The sewer dump station has always been one of my favorites; I know that sounds weird, but dumping your tanks is a necessary part of the boondocking lifestyle, and Storrie Lake always had a great one until it broke a few years ago.

But they put in a brand-new drain field and left the part that I liked the best, which is the driveway where you park to dump your tanks is sloped towards the dump station, so your tanks drain really fast, and they empty completely.... I know it's a small thing, but being a boondocker, you learn to appreciate the small things.

This is one of my neighbors, he runs around the yard making sure there are no bugs to bother me.

I named him speedy because he's the fastest lizard I've ever seen in my life. He's so fast I can't see him while he's running, he seems to disappear from the spot he's in, and reappear 3 feet later in another.

This huge bee was buzzing around me when I was taking pictures of a Creosote bush. Bees don't bother me, but this one was so big and scary looking I had to look it up on the Internet. Turns out it's a Carpenter bee and only the females have a stinger. But being unable to tell if this one was wearing high heels and makeup I decided to leave it alone just in case.
