Yet another breezy day. I'm getting tired of this wind; of course, some wind is pretty normal for the West, but usually, there's a break from it, and it doesn't blow for most of the day. But other than that, it's still in the 80s, and the humidity is low, so I'm very comfortable without an air conditioner running.

I'll be heading for the City of Rocks State Park tomorrow morning. They have some first-come, first-serve boondocking sites there, so I have high hopes there will be one available for me. I always enjoy the City of Rocks; it's a pretty place to be and can have some spectacular sunrises and sunsets, depending on the clouds. There are also nice walking paths available. The flatlanders can walk on trails out in the Prairie, or for a bit more challenge; you can walk through the rocks.

It's about a 30-mile drive from the City of Rocks to Silver City, New Mexico, where there's a Walmart, among other things, so I don't plan on making that drive very often, which is why I'm going to stop at the Walmart in Deming before I leave town. Of course, theirs a Harbor Freight in Silver City, and there is another tool that I could use, so I'm pretty sure I'll go there at least once.

I like that area. We have stayed at both City of the Rocks and Rockhound several times. Last Feb. we passed through there having reservations at the Rocks in a boondock site. It was predicted to get down to well below freezing so we elected to stay at a private CG in Silver City. Expensive but we had plenty of heat. The next day they predicted high winds and almost blizzard conditions so we left for Arizona early. We got down to I10 and they closed it due to several wrecks.....what a mess. Took 70 to Safford......This is why reservations are a pain in the butt.

Don't plan on traveling in Feb. in NM again!!! LOL!!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you Larry, but I've been on the road to the City of Rocks State Park, and I just got here.

My experience is this last winter was an anomaly. In all the years I've been coming to Southern Arizona and New Mexico, including back when I often visited my daughter and her husband when they lived in Phoenix, I have never seen a winter this cold and wet, and thank goodness for that. I got paid back for dealing with all of the cold wet weather in Arizona by getting to experience a super-bloom in wild flowers this Spring, and it was certainly beautiful so maybe it was worth it.

I've always felt that New Mexico was too cold and windy to spend most of the winter in and feel that its only warm enough for me during the early fall, and late spring, which is why I'm there now, and the weather is fine.

I know Southern Texas is a good place to be during the winter, it certainly appeals to a lot of people. But after decades of living in Miami Florida and having to deal with humidity in the 90s, mosquitoes by the ton, and sweating like a hog all day and all night, for some reason instead of being used to it, I have lost the ability to deal with it for more than a very brief time.

And you're right reservations are a pain in the butt for a variety of reasons, but for me personally my whole life has been lived on a schedule to one degree or another, and now other than special occasions, I try my best to avoid being at a certain place, by a certain time…I call it freedom.
