Today's been a busy day, today is my Grandsons actual birthday so there's going to be a few celebratory things going on this afternoon but Saturday is the big party.
I spent a lot of the morning assembling what will eventually be a a tiny little table and chairs, suitably sized for a four-year-old and his 18-month-old sister. This was supposed to be one of his presents but Amazon only shipped us the chairs and not the table. So I spent the last few days emailing the table and chair company and they tell me that there is now a table on the way.
I don't remember kids birthdays being that big a deal when I was growing up. Of course we were kind of poor but there would still be the traditional blowing out the candles on the birthday potato following the tradition of standing in silent embarrassment while family members that can't sing croak and screech out a rendition of happy birthday to you. And there would usually be a gift from the family of a shovel or some other useful tool but that was about it. I guess rich families had parties with a lot of people invited over, but our birthday potato was only big enough to feed the birthday boy or girl as the case may be.
Speaking of putting things together I still haven't started putting my easy chair together yet. Usually that could be chalked up to habitual laziness on my part but this time there's actually a good reason.
I like to have large pouches on either side of my easy chair where I keep some maps, maybe a book I'm reading, a few slices of pizza, a handgun or two and a bottle of Mezcal that I bought in Mexico 25 years ago that's never been opened, I don't want to drink the stuff I just like talking to the worm every once in a while. So my wife took the sides of the chair home to sew some pouches on them and I'm waiting for that to get done so I can assemble the chair.
