Click my grandsons pics before he runs away.

Yesterday my grandson woke up and came downstairs to the living room not realizing I had my camera with me after taking pictures of the deer walking by. And I got to surreptitiously snap a few pictures before he realized he was on Candid Camera.

The following ten days, the weather is predicted to be mostly hot and dry. Then, a couple of days next week, it's supposed to be pushing 100° in Denver, but mainly in the low 90s, with humidity in the teens, I will be reasonably comfortable without air conditioning.

I think in August I need to take a mini-vacation. I don't know where I would go; I just know it needs to be UP!

Anyplace in Colorado, that attracts tourists is pretty crowded now and will remain that way until kids get back in school, but when that is now days is anybody's guess. And the only place in Colorado where you can escape is places that tourists don't want to go, which for the most part is the eastern plains, better known as the flat-lands.

There are several reasons why no one wants to go to the flat-lands in the summer. One.... The land is so flat you can stand on a coffee can and see Kansas. Two.... It's really hot. And neither one of those attributes will attract tourists or locals trying to escape the heat.

I could go up to my property for a few days, that's a possibility, but I would prefer someplace I haven't been for a while. I have a hankering to spend more time in Salida Colorado, I kinda like that town, and I didn't see enough of it the last time I was there.

So I don't know what I'll do. Maybe I'll do what I often do and surprise myself. I tend to find myself in some great places when I don't know where I'm going, and Colorado has a lot of great places once you get above eight or nine thousand feet.

But it didn't take him long to realize that grandpa was creeping and lurking around the living room instead of being the usual jovial center of attention that he normally is.

So the camera had to be put away to get the suspicious grandson out from under the sofa cushions.

August 4 the kids are due back in school here in this area of North Alabama. The campground might get a lot quieter then. And I still do not know what I will do.

I think school starting is about the same here in Denver, but it used to be the second week of August.

I guess it depends on how many young tourist folks you have at your RV Park. It should get a lot more peaceful if the young families with kids start pulling out. On the other hand there's a lot of folks homeschooling now, especially young people living in RVs, so those families might still be around.

When in doubt about where to go I always lean towards where the weather's best. And for me in the summer that would be the mountains where it's a lot cooler. I know mountains aren't your first choice. But the Smoky Mountains aren't that far away from you, and the highest point in the Smoky Mountains is about 6600 feet which is about 2000 feet less than Woodland Park Colorado where I used to live, and that's at the top of Clingman's Dome so the normal altitude shouldn't be very high.

But of course the biggest problem with the Smoky Mountain area is its probably still teeming with tourists, and will only get worse when the leaves start changing.

So other than the high areas of New Mexico, which are still going to be pretty darn hot for the next couple months it doesn't seem like there's too much to do except stay near the coast where the breezes will make it cooler, but the extreme humidity will probably make it more difficult to deal with.

Too bad you won't be near the Northwest Pacific Coast. I've always found the summers in Oregon and Washington to be more than acceptable.... If you can deal with the occasional riot.

The five summers (2002-2007) I spent in Richland Washington were very nice. From my Texas perspective, summer in Richland was the middle two weeks of August. Two hours driving east or west put you well up into the mountains,

Most of my time was spent in the Ferndale, Bellingham area and other than winter, I thought it was a beautiful place. But that's an awful long drive for us full timers that don't cover a lot of miles in a day.

It sounds like Darrell hasn't had problems getting reservations in his northward travels even during the peak tourist month of July. Maybe you could head North up into the Ozark Mountains there's a lot to see and do up there and it's got to be cooler than Alabama.

Oh oh oh. You did beautifully with the grandson. He looks a bit fey too. Which I do not consider a bad thing. (I looked it up, ."giving an impression of vague unworldliness" or "having powers of clairvoyance").

What a wonderful age....and what a good work you have done.
If someone had taken such good photoa of me at that age, I wouldn't be holding against then years later. He might now, or in a couple of years, but not later.

Thank you Judith that's very kind of you. I think I have a aura of vague unworldliness myself, in fact my demeanor is vague and unworldly, sort of a cross between a vague homeless bum and a unworldly space alien.

P.S. I think you and the OFM will figure out where you want to be.
You both have experience. Though I can't believe you mentioned the word "coast" at this time of year, unless you want to drive to Maine. Now THERE'S a thought.

Driving to Maine is not in the cards, at the rate we travel it would be winter before we got there. And don't confuse experience with knowledge. Experience simply means we continue doing the wrong things over and over again until were good at it. And if we had any knowledge we would have stopped doing that years ago.

Yeah the coast would be a last resort for me, but there are the ocean breezes and it can get a little cooler at night. But it's hard to beat the mountains in the summer. A couple thousand feet up or down can move those temperatures into the comfortable range. And even if it was a hot day its still going to be 40 or 50 at night which for me is great sleeping weather. And I can take pretty much any heat during the day as long as I know it's going to be blanket weather at night.

I've spent years grooming my persona to fit the vague homeless bum and unworldly space alien so I'm the perfect boondocker.

Appearing to be a vague homeless bum the cops leave me alone, after all homeless bums can live anywhere they choose, and looking like an unworldly space alien makes people fearful enough to stay away.
