I never would've guessed

I spent the day cleaning a few things in the Arctic Fox, it was a cloudy rainy day that barely made it into the 60s so there wasn't much else I could do anyway.

I filled up one of my propane tanks this morning at $2.90 a gallon. That's a lot for a propane company, but it seems like anything to do with oil or natural gas is getting expensive, and I see no reason  why it will not continue to do so.

But before I got the propane I stopped by the old part of town, which appropriately enough is called "Old Town" and took a few pictures. While I was there I noticed three or four big moving van sized Trucks parked next to the street, and three or four security guards standing around nearby where the trucks were. I thought it all looked kind of odd but I was more interested in taking pictures.

After that I drove to another location to take some pictures of Lion Park, which turned out to be just across the street from where infamous personality, and gunfighter, Doc Holliday owned a bar. His ownership didn't last very long since he shot and killed somebody and after a while decided to leave town and go to Denver.

When I got to lion Park I noticed a bunch more large moving van sized trucks parked across the street from lion Park where Doc Holliday's bar was. There were also a couple of cops sitting in two cruisers talking to each other. I figured by now Doc Holliday couldn't be causing very much trouble, but if he was I wanted to know about it, so I asked one of the cops what was going on.... And never in a million years would I have guessed what he was going to say.

If you saw this, could you guess what's going on?

I apologize for these photographs I had to take them through my windshield.

My first guess was they've got the road blocked off because they're installing this billboard sized sign on that old building. But what are all those trucks doing here? It doesn't take that much equipment to install a sign.

And what about that weird swivel head holding up the billboard? That's not what they use to pick up a sign. The weird head is holding the back of the sign, how can they install it like that?

A deputy Sheriff easily straightened out this whole confusing mess by telling me.... There's two movie companies in town making two separate films. Well I guess that explains it, but I never would've guessed it.

Come to find out Las Vegas New Mexico has been advertising itself to Hollywood filmmakers for years, and dozens of films, beginning back in the silent movie days, have used Las Vegas and its old buildings as locations, or backdrops. Films such as Easy Rider, Convoy, Red Dawn, No Country for Old Men, and many  more were filmed wholly or in part, right here in Las Vegas.

So what is the giant billboard looking thing? I don't know for sure but now that I know they're making a movie I would say it's a large infinitely adjustable reflector to enhance outdoor lighting.

I'm hoping someone will enjoy seeing this statue that used to be a fountain.

That small piece of sandstone laying at the foot of the statue, kinda resembles the lion's
missing lip.

This lion fountain carved by a local artist in 1896 and commissioned by the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, was built on a piece of land used to park wagons while the folks walked into town.

The W. C. T. U felt that having some drinking water close by would encourage folks to drink water instead of stopping at the local saloons, the nearest of which appeared to be Doc Holliday's bar which was only about 100 feet away. And considering Doc Holliday's proclivity for gunplay could explain some of the statues missing pieces.

The fountain is carved out of sandstone, which is better than adobe, but not by much, so its rapidly falling apart. Plans have been made to refurbish it, but my guess would be once the plans come to the check writing stage, that's where they end.
