I respond to Larry's comments

In response to Larry's comment today, I would start by saying that yes, I believe the RV trend will be a bubble. RVs, in my opinion, is much like boats, people buy them thinking they're going to use them every weekend, and a year later, they find out it's actually four or five times a year, which is why it used to be pretty common to see a 10-year-old class "C" with 8,000 miles on it.

I've seen a lot of bubbles in my 74 years of living. The first one I remember is the Davy Crockett coonskin cap and then the Hulu Hoop, so yes, the current hot-ness is an RV, but once most folks have spent some time dealing with high gas prices, poor gas mileage, expensive, crowded RV parks, RVs that shed parts as they drive down the road, ripoff RV repair places, trailer tires that barely last long enough to get to the next tire store, most folks are going to park the RV behind the house and go looking for the next hula hoop.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Oregon myself, and it is a beautiful state. But since my current life revolves around solar panels, Oregon's often skimpy sunshine production takes it off my list of favorite places to hang out, and the current state of politics in Oregon is keeping me from looking forward to returning.

I too, would love to spend more time visiting the South Eastern United States. I grew up in Mobile, Alabama, South Georgia, Greenville, South Carolina, Miami, Florida, and the Smoky Mountains. But those places have become crowded, have expensive RV parks, and worst of all, very little boondocking available. These problems have been keeping me away from some of the places I would love to visit again. But I think if I had a smaller, lighter, easier to maneuver RV, that might encourage me to visit those places once again.

There is not much that will make me more miserable than traveling with what you describe as "extensive planning and reservations." To me, freedom is happiness, and happiness is freedom. And there is very little that will remove freedom, and therefore happiness, from my life quicker than a schedule.

I'm retired, I'm free to move about the country, why would I throw that freedom away by forcing myself to stay someplace every single day that I may or may not want to be? For the folks that want to live that way, God bless um, I'm glad you're happy. But for me, the ability to come and go when and where I please is the basis of the joy I get living this full-time lifestyle.

I definitely believe boondocking will become more popular, even though for selfish reasons, I wish it wouldn't. But solar panels are becoming much more affordable, the newer lithium-iron batteries becoming more and more available, so having a substantial battery bank and a good way of keeping it charged up is easier than ever, but still rather expensive.

For most places, Fall and Spring is a great time to be most anywhere. If there are any pretty trees changing color in the Fall, then usually only the weekends will be crowded with leaf peepers. The rest of the time, there is hardly anyone  around... Except in the Smoky Mountains and that place is never not busy. Spring is also an excellent time to travel for retirees because the kids are still in school.

You're right, RVing offers something for everybody, and there's no wrong way to do it; if it makes you happy, that's the right way to RV. I guess that's why folks are living happily in Florida, the Texas Gulf coast, and the deserts of southern Arizona in the wintertime, and all are equally happy, and if they weren't, they would be somewhere else.

I'm partial to the desert Southwest probably because living in Miami, Florida for 20 years or so gave me a lifetime of humidity and sweating like a hog day and night, so the dry desert air feels great to me. Because no matter how hot it gets during the day, it's always good sleeping weather at night.
