Maybe Elephant Butte State Park knew I was leaving and put on this sunset show just to show me what I would be missing.
This morning was a safe and uneventful drive from Elephant Butte State Park to Gallup New Mexico. I decided this morning to let my GPS pick my route to Gallup, so I told it to take the shortest way possible, and it routed me north on I-25 to Los Lunas, New Mexico, where I turned on Highway six West to I-40. And oddly enough, Highway six was part of the original alignment of route 66 back in the day. And then West on I-40 until I got to Gallup.
The weather for Gallup is looking a little worse than yesterday, and I don't know how they will fly the balloons any time except early Saturday morning because of the wind, and even then, there's a small chance of snow.
Having never been to a balloon rally before, I don't know how the balloonaters handle weather like this. Do they take chances and take off despite the winds being a little high? Do they sit next to their balloon and drink all day? Do they call the whole thing off? I don't know, but I will probably find out in the next day or so.
I got settled into my campsite, even though I'm a day early. There's kinda a lot of RVs here but luckily I was able to choose a spot that I can look out my back door without looking at another camper, although I'm pretty sure that will change when all the balloon people get here.
Theboondork.... Maybe for the next few days I can be theballoondork
