Boondocking on BLM land 5 miles from Yuma.

I woke up in Yuma, Arizona, to a beautiful day. The sun was shining; the sky was blue, and it was in the low 70s for a high temperature, and 50s projected for tonight... It couldn't be better.

Yuma in the summer has got to be one of the hottest places I've ever been in my life, but in the winter, the weather is almost always great, even when the rest of Arizona is chilly. Yuma, a lot of the time seems like a comfortable place to be.

And, of course, that means that Yuma is overflowing with snowbirds from up north that spend the winter in the gigantic RV parks in Yuma or have a trailer they leave in the humongous mobile home parks scattered around Yuma since during the summer it's all but impossible for a normal human being to live in the heat of Yuma..... it's a dry heat, but once it gets over 120°, it doesn't matter how dry it is. It hurts to breathe.

I'm hoping I can find the motivation to install my new vent fan over the bed while I'm here, but I'm not counting on it. It's not a big job; it just requires that I wake up feeling like doing something useful instead of sitting around playing on the computer. Yuma would be a good place to tackle the vent fan job since there's a Home Depot nearby for any bits and pieces I may need. On the other hand, when I leave here, I'll be staying in Quartzsite for a while, and of course, Quartzsite has everything imaginable to repair and modify an RV if I want to tackle the job when I get there.

I think I've brought everything I need to do the job since I was planning on doing it this winter during my travels; I even brought my telescoping ladder, so getting up on the roof is quick and easy.

So it appears that my laziness and lack of motivation are the only reasons I haven't done it yet... Well, not the only reasons, there's procrastination to consider, and initiative; I'm definitely short of initiative, and what about ambition? I can't even see ambition in the rearview mirror.

From the humblest tent camper....

To the most ostentatious motorhome, everyone is welcome to boondock here just outside of Yuma.

Whenever I'm in a place like this, surrounded by all these long-term boondockers I don't feel like I'm an oddball since I'm around so many of my own kind.

I'm really liking this size and concept of camper vans. I guess it could be called a "Super B" or something like that. But it seems to solve a lot of the van problems, such as not being wide enough for a 6 foot tall person to sleep crossways in a normal sized van, and yet it's still small enough that you can use regular parking spaces so you don't need a toad to run to the store. It seems to hit the right balance of small enough and at the same time, big enough.

The problem of course is its price, It's almost $200,000 and I've bought several decent three-bedroom homes for less money than that, all of which increased in value as time went on, and this thing will be lucky if it's worth half what it costs in a few years.
