Labor Day holiday

Labor Day weekend will soon be upon us, and my family is going to do what normal families do on a holiday: they're going camping. And I'll be doing what I normally do on a Labor Day holiday, watching their house to make sure everything's okay and hiding under my bed until it's over.

I remember what it was like on holidays when I was young and raising a family, and often they were like any other day; since I always needed the money, I would volunteer to work on holidays to get the double-time pay. But when we did do something for the holidays, I remember it being almost as much work and stress as a regular work day.

Between checking everything to make sure nothing was left behind, dealing with the traffic, and making sure everyone was having fun and being safe. Then with the long, arduous drive back home in lines of heavy traffic, I usually got back badly in need of rest instead of relaxed and ready to go back to work the next day.

And while living in Miami, Florida, we weren't that far from the wonderful world of Disney, so sometimes a holiday meant driving up to Orlando and coughing up a month's pay to stand in line for hours trying to see what Disney World had to offer.

For those of you who have never visited Disney World on a holiday, I would suggest instead jumping into a river full of starving Piranha, where the pain and misery will be over quicker than standing in lines at Disney World, not to mention the money you'll save.

So I am perfectly happy to be staying in the Arctic Fox in my daughter's driveway than driving for hours and staying at a campground during the Labor Day holiday. I know It doesn't sound very interesting to be hiding under my bed for three days. But at least it will be peaceful and quiet in Denver, especially with everybody but me off camping in the mountains. And staying here I won't have to deal with people that only camp three times a year, and haven't the foggiest idea about campground courtesy, and I won't have to listen to generators and rap music all day and all night.
