My favorite season in Colorado

It was a beautiful day today, sunny and about 70 degrees, so I drove around a little bit and took a few pictures of of the autumn colors that are starting to show up now in Denver.

I've been doing some straightening up and cleaning up in the Arctic Fox to get it ready for my winter trip to Arizona. Not that I couldn't straighten it up while I'm in Arizona its just that fixing things up and putting things away puts me in a traveling mood and makes me feel like I'm going on vacation.

I've always loved to travel and I've always enjoyed preparing for the trip. There's just something about getting ready for a trip that puts me in a good mood, or I should say a better mood because I'm always in a good mood. Sometimes it seems like the only time my old truck gets washed is right before I take a trip because I've always believed that a clean truck runs better, and gets better fuel mileage.

It's gonna take me a while to get to southern Arizona because I drive slow, don't drive very far in a day, and don't want to get there while it's still 100 degrees in the shade. I figure I'll spend some time in northern New Mexico and northern Arizona waiting for it to cool down in the desert areas. My New Mexico annual Park pass is still good so I'll be able to use the state parks there for some inexpensive or free boondocking, and nothing makes me happier than free boondocking

Yep it has been a cleaning out day. The trailer is trying to float off like a hot air balloon without the weight of all the STUFF that is gone. The three dumpsters are splitting at the seams. The itch starts getting scratched near the end of October this year. I will knock off 500 miles in two days to start the rolling. That will put me into Texas and then I can relax again. My New Mexico sticker runs out in March of 2018. I wander and smile.

My first two travel days will be a wee bit shorter than yours. Day one will end at Chatfield reservoir state Park about three miles from where I am now so I can dump my tanks. The end of day two should find me boondocking in the Bass Pro parking lot in Colorado Springs,That will be about 50 miles.

I wish I had your ability to empty out a trailer. My problem is every time I get rid of something I find something else to take its place that I really, really, need.

Strangely enough my New Mexico sticker will also spontaneously self-destruct in March.

Hi Tom,

Nice pics! Fall in Colorado looks really beautiful, we've never been there but but we do look forward to it.

Arizona, on the other hand -- we've been in varied parts of that state during our rental-RV vacations during 3 different winters, and loved every bit of it. Can't wait to be back in our own RV and spend the whole season instead of a few short weeks.

Good luck on your trip and we look forward to your reports so we can also be there vicariously! :-)

Thank you Vall and Mo, Western Colorado is a beautiful place, but the eastern half looks pretty much like Kansas.

There are some folks that don't like Arizona and the desert Southwest they say it's to barren and to.... Deserty. Those folks often end up in South Florida where the cockroaches and the mosquitoes often resemble something from Jurassic Park, the humidity's so high you can mix it with your whiskey, and free boondocking is something they only hear rumors of.

But for me I love being out in the desert. I like the peacefulness and the solitude of it. I like being able to boondock around people if I want to, or go off by myself if I need to. I couldn't stay there all year of course, its too hot and I have to see a tree every now and then, so Colorado is a great place to come back to every summer.

Well, you and Barney enjoy your upcoming travels. I'll be stationary for at least a few more months. Maybe hit the road in the spring, hopefully. Ya'll be safe out there.

Thank you Darrell. I hope everything goes well enough for you and the family that you will be able to get on the road by Spring.

There's a lot of worse places in the country than Louisiana to spend the winter, Colorado comes to mind. In fact one of these days I plan on going to the south for the winter. I've lived in South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia, and the winters are fairly mild and I would really enjoy visiting some of the places I used to live.

One of the things I would really love to do is visit the Smokey Mountain national Park in the fall. I know the crowds are horrendous but it sure would bring back a lot of memories for me.
