My fifth anniversary as a full-timer.

Today marks my fifth anniversary of being a full-timer. Five years ago, I went to the closing on my house and handed over the keys to a new owner. Fortunately, everything went smoothly, and we were done in about half an hour, which is lightning quick compared to some closings in which I've participated. I then drove my truck back to the house,  which was only two miles away, backed under the Arctic Fox, hitched up, and pulled out of my driveway for the last time.

I reread the post I made in my blog that day, and I still feel some of the sadness I felt as I was driving away. It wasn't like I was moving away from a terrible life; I enjoyed my life, but circumstances required a change, and I was tired of dealing with the harsh winters living in the mountains. And even though I was going to be living a brand-new life, I had spent enough time in RVs to have a pretty good idea of what this new life was going to entail. Although I have to say no matter how much you've traveled in an RV, going full-time, and not having a home base to return to takes a lot of adjustment in your way of thinking.

But I believe some folks handle it better than others because it is a tremendous change and requires looking at life in a completely different way. I don't know the percentage of people who start full-timing, find out they don't like it and buy another house. I'm just guessing, but I would think the rate is relatively high. And I believe that could be because not having a home base makes more of a change in your life than you can imagine. Or because simplifying your life, which is something full-timers are required to do, doesn't suit your personality and you absolutely, positively, without a doubt, cannot live with less than ten pairs of shoes.

And speaking of personalities, I believe some folks will have more trouble than others adapting to a full-time lifestyle. And that would be the type "A" personalities, the go-getters, the have to be doing something all the time, the high-stress lifestyle, the success is measured by how much you've accomplished that day type folk. If you're like that, maybe you can become a full-time; it's just going to be a lot more difficult and may require some intervention.

Fortunately for me, I'm the exact opposite of those types. Success for me is how little I've done that day, preferably without moving from the same spot I sat down in that morning. I have a type "Z" personality, which can best be described as zzzzzz. I can relax and sleep soundly in a Flying J truck stop. Up until the Bat flu came along, I didn't have a worry in the world. I'm as stress-free as a human being can be and still be breathing. In other words, I'm the perfect candidate for a successful full-time lifestyle, which is probably why I enjoy my life so much.

So here I am starting my sixth year of full-timing, not as long as some folks, but a little longer than others, and every year I live this way, the more I enjoy it. I have no desire whatsoever to buy a house and settle down. The thought of looking out my window at the same annoying neighbors, every day, day after day, until the glorious moment I finally keel over and end the misery would be a nightmare for me.

So I step into my sixth year of full-timing tomorrow, deliberately and without hesitation. Not knowing where I'm going or what I'll be doing but with the absolute certainty that I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.
