Okay, now where was I? I think we've established that I'm uncouth and don't like to waste water; oh yeah, restaurants, I was talking about restaurants. Not each individual restaurant but restaurants in general.

Restaurants are in business to make money, that's pretty obvious, and they make that money by selling you food, and the more food they sell you, the more money they make, still very obvious. And to sell you more food they have to make the food taste good, and there's where the problem lies.

Most things that make food taste good are actually not very good for you. For example, sugars and fats tend to put weight on people, but they make almost everything taste better, and the better the food taste, the more often you will return, and the more return business they get, the more money the restaurant makes.

Now, restaurants don't start with the idea that they want to make people fat; they usually start with the idea of serving good food so they can make money and stay in business. But unless there in the health-food business, with a restaurant named "Broccoli, Broccoli,, Broccoli," chances are they will want their food to taste good, which will usually involve lots of sugars and fats.

Now there would be nothing wrong with that if we all worked as hard as people used to, we would burn up some of those calories, but for those of you that have lived as long as I have, which will soon be 76 years, you probably remember that folks didn't use to be as overweight as far too many folks are today.

Thinking back to my childhood, I recall my grandparents, and other old people that I would see were quite thin, which at the time wasn't considered thin, it was considered normal. And the reason were no longer like that is because of poor diet, and lack of meaningful exercise. And restaurants, if frequented too often, play a big part in that poor diet situation.

Not only do restaurants have a lot of high-calorie foods for sale, but those foods also taste very good, and to make matters worse they also give out larger portions, so you feel like you're getting your money's worth when you see that plate overflowing. So we're eating very high-calorie foods at most restaurants and probably eating too much of it, as witnessed by America's current waistlines.

So for longer than I can remember, I've decided to only eat at restaurants every once in a while, or for special occasions, and not make it a habit. I love the good food they serve but don't love what it does to me. So I try to stay away from restaurants as much as possible but Lord knows I love a Chinese buffet, even though I'm not sure they even have them anymore since the bat flu; and I would walk barefoot over broken glass for a large order of Popeye's red beans and rice.

This critter looks like it can reach out and grab you from pretty far away. That doesn't concern me because he's only the size of my thumbnail, but he might be the last sight a small bug will ever see.
