Gateway to the high country.

I'm back where I have Internet now, but I'm not home; I'm still on my mini-vacation. I wrote this blog post and took these pictures the day I left Denver, heading for the high country. So pretend that I'm writing this today, even though I'm not... Actually, I am writing THIS today, but the rest of this blog post I wrote several days ago. So all my blog posts will be several days farther behind than you think they are, but that doesn't bother me because I don't know what day it is anyway. After all, I'm on vacation.

I had an enjoyable drive to the high country this morning; I started about 9 o'clock and got here about one. I wasn't in a hurry, so it included included stopping at Walmart, filling up with diesel, and stopping for lunch.

I'm staying at a little BLM camping area, boondocking of course, near Tincup, and tomorrow I will go running around and see what I can find.

Lance comported itself well on the drive up here, and I couldn't tell any difference between driving the Lance and the little bronco. But, of course, part of that could be because I didn't put a lot of stuff in the Lance, whereas the little bronco had everything I needed to live in it, so it may have weighed more than the Lance does now.

And speaking of stuff. When I was putting the things I needed in the Lance to support me for a few days, I just threw all the junk I would need in three or four cardboard boxes and put those in the Lance. So now I've got three or four boxes full of everything scrambled together, so it's taking a lot of time to find anything when I need it.

I will eventually get everything sorted out; one of the things I wanted to accomplish on this mini-vacation is finding a place for everything so I can put everything in its place and I don't have to go searching through boxes and drawers every time I need a spoon.

Tonight will be my first night sleeping in the Lance, and I don't anticipate any difficulties since I can sleep pretty much anywhere.

My Internet here is sketchy at best, my Verizon MiFi won't pick up anything, but I can get a little bit of slow Internet using my phone as a hotspot. I doubt it will have the juice to send my blog with all of its pictures, but I'll try to see if it works.

Timberline. The world gets really harsh up here. It's 40° at lunchtime, and moving around too fast makes you dizzy.

The road from whence I came.... And I thought I came from Denver.

The parking lot at the top of Cottonwood pass. Flatlanders get out of their car up here thinking they can just go walking around the mountain, and they can.... For about two minutes, and then they pass out and hit their head on a rock, which explains the ambulance.

I found a nice boondocking spot, so now that I'm In the Lances natural environment, I can do a little relaxing, then start straightening things up so I can find things when I need them. You're looking at a happy camper.

Its not the nicest sunset I've ever seen, but it's so fantastic to be back in the high country, that it looks like a perfect sunset to me. It's down in the 50s when I took this picture, and I'm already wearing a coat.

As you boondock at many less traveled places you might want to check out a product called Travelfi. You select how much data you want and it connects to the best cell signal in the area regardless of carrier. No longer tied to a carriers MiFi. A friend purchased the unit and loves the lower cost for data and the fact it is from any carrier that is available.

That is something I had never heard of Glen, so I read up on the link you gave me to find out what was going on and here's what I think.

There are a lot of cell signals running around but from what I've read and talked to people about, Verizon and AT&T are the two that have the most coverage out in the sticks. And some other cell companies piggyback off of those two.

It seems like most other cell phone companies are mostly represented in the cities, so no matter which cell phone company you choose you have plenty of reception in populated areas, but like I said before as far as I can tell it's mostly Verizon and AT&T that has the boondocks covered.

As for the cost of TravlFi's monthly service, I would hate to lose my Verizon unlimited plan, because it is truly an unlimited plan with no throttling involved like most other "unlimited" plans. That plan cost me $70 a month and I've had it for several years now and I literally have the Internet on almost all day every day.

So the TravlFi sounds like a good idea for people that travel a lot, like me for instance. But for my current lifestyle I have yet to run into any place where I couldn't get a Wi-Fi signal except in places where Wi-Fi doesn't exist, my recent trip to Tincup would be one of those places, as would my property in the Colorado mountains.

So for some folks who spend a lot of time on the road, and having the best reception is more important than the cost of the data plans, travlFi would make a lot of sense.

I just wanted you make you aware of it. You are right about AT&T and Verizon being most places with T-Mobile improving their coverage. It is hard to beat the true unlimited plan for cost. Another friend has that old plan and won't change phones or plans as it is no longer offered. He just buys a late model used iPhone every once in a while, for new features.

Thank you Glen. I always appreciate it when folks make an effort to try and help me live a better life than I'm living now. But my life is blessed and it's almost impossible to offer a suggestion that makes me happier than my full-time life has been, but I always appreciate the effort.

I haven't paid much attention to what's been going on in the cell phone world ever since I got the unlimited plan that I'm using right now. It's worked out so well for me that I haven't felt the need for a change. And I'm afraid that I may have the same problem your friend has which is a fear of losing the plan I have now if I ever get a new phone.

Cell phones, and cell phone companies are a miasma of complicated, expensive tech, just waiting for someone to come along and make it so simple that today's phone companies get swept into the dust-bin of history by offering all your unlimited cell phone and unlimited Internet needs in one place anywhere in the world at a reasonable price... The name Elon Musk comes to mind.

Yeah I came off the mountain and dropped down into Gunnison Colorado where there's civilization, Internet, and weather that's still rainy, but not nearly as chilly as it was in the high country.

I do miss not being able to post my blog every day, but it does help me if I'm still writing it every day.... I think I'm addicted.
