And the savings of not having to drive very far can be enough to put a big dent in a campsite cost with my gas rig much less your diesel rig,

You're right as always Barney. Since I'm having to pay more attention now days to where my money goes, I try to do much less driving when I have no reason to drive, especially when I'm camped someplace where groceries are far away.

Well, I would stay where you are till the 18th, then hoof it on over to Ben Avery. Good place to be over the holidays, close to everything you might need and no worries about illegals. Also, not too far from Tucson

Ben Avery gun range has to be one of my favorite places, and one that I get to every year during the winter, but at the moment it's about 400 miles from here to there. Now I know 400 miles doesn't sound like much to normal folks, and it used to not sound like much to me. Since it's about 900 miles from where I lived in Colorado to where my daughter lived South of Phoenix, and I would drive that in one day with no problem.

I used to stay at a park that required reservations but was never full. When I got to town, I would stop at Walmart to buy groceries and call from there to make reservations for that night. Freedom in spite of required reservations?

I'm having to do more and more of that myself Linda. Some state parks, especially in Colorado now require reservations all the time, so what I've done in the past is go in the gate, and make a reservation with my phone for that night... And pay the exorbitant fee charged by Reserve America... May they slip and fall face first into the cats litter box!... They've got plenty of room, they just require reservations.

Yes, the commercialization of public lands is very frustrating and IMHO wrong. The reservation system is expensive and forces some into a schedule that requires planning months in advance. In the west (Or, Ca, Wa and Idaho especially) The feds have turned over their campgrounds to private contractors who adjust the fees and charge extras on top of the senior pass discount. A long time ago I worked on a National Forest in Oregon where the Forest Service hired temps and interns to manage the campgrounds. Now they turn public lands over to private contractors.
