Everybody's battening down the hatches today, getting ready for the cold front that's going to come through tonight. The latest weather forecast is calling for a 95° high today dropping down to almost freezing tonight and then a high tomorrow of 37°, a low of 29°, and 4 1/2 inches of snow. It all sounds so unbelievable with me sitting here right now with all my Windows and door open, the vent fans going, and the Arctic Fox's living room temperature is 87°.

I don't think I will run my furnace tonight because it shouldn't get cold enough to freeze the pipes in the basement, but tomorrow night I will have to. As warm as things are around here, I'm sure the snow will melt off quickly, so I'm hoping my solar panels won't be shut down for long. Because I sure don't want to crawl up on the roof in the snow and clean them off, as that sounds a wee bit dangerous to me. And I don't deal well with the cold since my whole full-timing lifestyle is based on dealing with moderate heat, not the cold.

It will remain pretty chilly for the next couple of days after the front goes through with the forecast being highs in the 40s and 50s until Friday when it gets up to 70° again. Still, at least all of those days will be above freezing even at night, so I don't have to worry about my pipes breaking. But it does make me wonder what I'm going to have to deal with remaining here until Thanksgiving.

Quickly changing the subject.... Since I didn't go anywhere or do anything this Labor Day holiday hasn't affected me in the least. In fact, if it wasn't for the calendar, I wouldn't even know it had happened. Holidays that don't affect my life at all are starting to become my favorite holidays. I think that's one of the signs of becoming a geezerly old curmudgeon... Bah! Humbug!

"I don't deal well with the cold" gives even more push to head south when normal and come back for the Thanksgiving holiday does't it.

I am facing the same sort of choice with Alabama for a short stay in late January.

Well it appears that you safely made it to Junction and are now ensconced at a State Park with a new view. And I would venture a guess that considering the length of time you spent in Del Rio that a new view is very much appreciated.

Yes a temporary absence is under consideration and might even blend in with a mini-vacation but as usual a lot depends on what options are open to me in dealing with the bat flu and how far I would have to go to warm up.

Well, brrrr. Hunkering down are you? Here, 600 or so miles south, I am awaiting it eagerly. The army vehicle reminded me of the "command car" my father used to pick me up from 1st grade in 1950. I can't believe he liked it. He'd BEEN in the army in WWII. And got shot up. It was a little damp on rainy days. A canvas cover only does so much for humidity. And was a bit of a climb for my short legs, and a tad cold in winter. Still, I wish I had it. He sold it soon after as best I recall.

Yeah I'm hunkered down at the moment but so far all we've got is wind. I'm not expecting any serious changes in the weather until I wake up tomorrow morning.

A lot of those World War II surplus vehicles were brought back to the states and almost given away they were so cheap. One of my uncles in Sebring Florida had a surplus Jeep from World War II that he used for hunting for many many years.

Thanks for that story about you and your Dad. I like stories like that. And it's our job to pass those stories down to the grandkids.

I know it was a holiday here yesterday because the restaurant served brunch instead of dinner. That's it. That's how I know. I'm with you in being glad to ignore holidays otherwise.

I think holidays were invented for kids and working adults. They give the kids something fun to do, and people with jobs get a day off.

But if you're over 65 and retired, every day is fun, and every day is a day off, so you're stuck with the bad parts of the holidays like dealing with crowds and spending money.
