The acoustics are so good at Red Rocks you can hear the pics being clicked.

For lack of something better to do, and it being so hot during the daytime I don't feel like doing anything, I took a 15 minute drive to Red Rocks Amphitheater and took a few pictures this morning.

Here you can see the entrance to the amphitheater on the left, and the stage down at the bottom on the right. In the middle is seating and walkways. And rather steep stairs run along both sides of the amphitheater from top to bottom.

This is a picture I got off the Internet of what Red Rocks looks like during a concert. They're having a concert tonight which is the reason we visitors can't get on or even near the stage. Some say the acoustics at Red Rocks are unmatched by any outdoor amphitheater.

Here's another picture I got off the Internet showing that concerts aren't the only thing they do at Red Rocks. I don't know why anyone wants to do this in public, but some folks obviously do, and a whole lot more of them than I ever imagined.

Yes, the steps up and down Red Rocks are this steep. I think when they built this place back in the day, safety was of little concern. After walking up and down a few times I think there should be an age limit to walk to the stage and back, and whatever age they decide on, I'm pretty sure I'm over it. Come to think of it, I'm of the opinion that the bands playing here will normally keep folks my age away ...... probably far away.

Fortunately it's only about 6000 feet in altitude at Red Rocks so if you live in Colorado walking around the amphitheaters not too bad. But I would think if you're from someplace a lot closer to sea level going up and down here could be somewhat difficult. It is said that they have to provide oxygen for some of the musicians, and they're not even walking up and down the stairs.... Although they do jump around a lot.... And sometimes even pretend to sing.

This is as close as I was allowed to get to the stage, so I turned around and took a picture of some of the seating at the amphitheater. It's a long way to the top if you want to rock 'n' roll.

I'll save a few more pictures for tomorrow.

You might be able to suspect from my comment yesterday that I will never be able to sit very close to the stage at the
Red Rock Amphitheater. I'm OK with 6,000 ft altitude, but not those steps. Maybe even when I was young I would have had trouble. Perhaps they have good liability insurance. Sheesh.

I guess I'm lucky that I've lived in Colorado for about 40 years and all that time was in the mountains, so I got used to the altitude, and used to walking up and down hills. So even though I'm well into geezerdom walking in the mountains or even up and down stairs don't bother me that much. I'm sure it would bother me if I had to do it all the time, but just for a morning it's okay.

My mom used to live in Denver then the Springs so I've been to some of the tourist places there but I have no memory of going to the amphitheater so we probably didn't since I remember Garden of the Gods and the Air Force chapel and the dinner show at the Flying W ranch.

All those places are very familiar to me, having been to everyone.

Garden of the Gods is of course still there, and more crowded than ever. I've driven through it three or four times in the last couple of years, and have yet to find a parking space where I could pull over and take a picture inside the park. Any pictures you seen in my blog of the the Garden of the Gods was taken from the road outside the park.

The Air Force Chapel hasn't changed, although they do have more modern airplanes that the students are taught to fly.

But the Flying W Ranch hasn't been so fortunate. Most of the Flying W Ranch was burned during the Waldo Canyon fire, which was the second fire that I had to evacuate from, and which an investigation shows was set by an arsonist, back seven or eight years ago, and I believe only one building survived. There slowly building back, but apparently it has been a real financial struggle.

Sorry to read about the Flying W. They served dinner on metal plates and I can still hear the guy reminding us, "Hand under the peach." If you held the plate anyplace else you would drop it when it got too hot to hold. That's pretty much all I remember of that visit but I can stil hear that, what, 40 years later?

Trying to give kids a memorable vacation is difficult at best because you never know what they're going to remember.

You can take them on a three day trip to Disney World, do all the Disney World stuff, costing thousands of dollars, and the kids will come home and the only thing they remember is playing in the swimming pool at the hotel, or a baby deer they saw standing beside the road.

It appears the amount of money that's spent on a vacation has absolutely nothing to do with the memories that are made, it seems to have more to do with the family being together.
