Small holidays are big business for casinos

A few of the casinos in Laughlin. I like to think of Laughlin as the old geezers Las Vegas. It's not as big as Las Vegas, but it's as big as it needs to be. It's not as glitzy as Las Vegas, but it's a lot cheaper to stay and play. And instead of running RVers off like Las Vegas does, Laughlin caters to RVers and appreciates the gambling geezers.

I'm giving some consideration to pulling out of Laughlin tomorrow. I usually don't pay any attention to minor holidays, like, for instance, St. Patrick's day, and the only reason I even know that Wednesday is St. Patrick's Day is the casinos are pushing it as a party day for casino patrons. And I get the feeling it could get pretty crowded around here if the casino's advertising hype pays off.

If it were Valentine's Day or something like that, it wouldn't bother me, but St. Patrick's Day has somehow turned into a "let's all go out and get drunk day," so I had just as soon avoid "the day" and especially its participants.

Casinos already encourage people to drink too much; after all, the more you drink, the more you gamble, so if you throw in a "drinking" holiday, things may get a little boisterous around here, which would interfere with my normally peaceful lifestyle.

Since I have a small project, I would like to do that will involve cutting up some wood that I bought at Home Depot the other day. I'm going to do the cutting with my Milwaukee battery-powered circular saw, which though very powerful, is also exceedingly noisy; I think I should find a place off to myself to do the cutting required for this job. So I'm considering heading back to Quartzsite for a couple of days to get this done and have a relaxing place to boondock where my noise won't bother anyone, and contemplate my next move.

Notice how all these modern casinos look basically the same. They don't have a unique look like the Pioneer, or the Colorado Belle. Their all built for efficiency. They have a theme of some kind but architecturally they're all basically the same.

The Colorado Belle used to be one of my favorite casinos. Now it's all closed up and the property is fenced off so I couldn't even get close to it. The Colorado Belle used to advertise itself as "the biggest boat built in the desert since Noah's Ark."

this eye-catching type of architectural design for casinos is going away. Nowadays the casinos are designed by lawyers and bean-counters to produce the most income per square foot. Their very modern looking, and their efficient, but just like all modern buildings, they have no soul....I'm gonna  miss the Belle.
