The trip is the thing

So what should I do about getting out of the very deep rut I've developed of heading South the same way year after year? And I guess the first thing I need to consider is, do I really want to change how I leave Colorado every Fall? And I think the answer to that would be a definite..... It depends.

I feel like I should be doing something a bit more challenging than what I do every single year. I think my truck could get me to New Mexico on I-25 if I cranked it up, put it in drive, and then climbed in the back seat and went to sleep.... Except I don't have a backseat anymore, but other than that, I've made that trip so often I'm pretty sure the truck knows the way. So it appears that me and the truck are in a rut.

So this year I feel like I need to make a change and take another route to get out of Colorado, something that will give me a "semi-new" view. I've been all over southern Colorado, so there probably is no "new view."

But like most everything in Colorado it would depend largely on the weather. If the weather is cold and snowy, I will of course take the quickest, shortest, way out of town, which always has been, head South on I-25 as quickly as possible. That would also include if there was a cold front coming in behind me I would try to outrun it, again by heading South on I-25.

But if the weathers not bad, which will more than likely be the case, that will give me the opportunity to drive south through the mountains, or drive west through the high country, and then head south sometime after I leave Colorado. Both of those things would be dependent upon the weather in the mountains, which can be completely different from the weather in the flat-lands where they put I-25. Either one of those drives would be far more scenic than the I-25 route.

I have gone to Arizona both of those ways before and either one is just fine for a leisurely drive like I'll be doing, but you certainly wouldn't want to drive through the mountains in late Fall if you have a schedule to be someplace at a certain time. But for my trip south I will be looking forward to seeing the snow-capped peaks, and the crisp Fall days almost as much as the trip itself.

And remember, for a long term boondocker like myself, there is no itinerary, no schedule, not even a destination. It's the people you meet, the places you go, and the things you do. The trip is the thing, and in my world, the trip has no end.
