I stopped at Penrose today on my way to Canon city to find the elementary school that I have to go to this weekend to take my motorcycle tests so I can get my motorcycle license. The school was easy to find and now I know how long it will take to get there so I won't be late.
Canon city has grown a lot since the last time I was there, they even have a Walmart. There's two brand-new prisons just before you get to town which I never noticed before and along with Old Max, Canon city is keeping up its reputation as the prison capital of Colorado
Which is not a bad thing to be I guess. That's what they were in the 1800s and it's probably even more lucrative today. There's a lot of people working at prisons and their decent paying jobs, so I would think having several prisons in town provides a good tax base for the community.
I stopped at Old Max but I didn't go in the museum I just walked around outside and took a few pictures. Old Max is still an operating prison but its not a maximum-security prison like it used to be.
I also stopped at the Holy Cross Abbey in Canon city it's a beautiful old monastery founded by the Benedictine monks. But their no longer there, it got to the point where there wasn't enough of them to keep the place open.
I don't know what they do with that huge building , there were cars there so it's obviously not abandoned. The way things are going around here they will probably rent it out as yet another tattoo parlor and drug dealer emporium, seeing as how we don't have enough of those infesting every town in Colorado.
