Thinking about the future

I know that doesn't look like much of a view from the bench but City of Rocks is about more than just rocks. The City Of Rocks is actually one of those very dark places that attract amateur astronomers. And some of the things in the park are laid out for the astronomers that come here at certain times of the year when something's happening in the sky. I'll talk more about that in another blog post.

I went for a walk early this morning as the sun was coming up, figuring it may be too cold in the mornings to be able to do that for a while. That will seriously cut into my picture-taking since I try to take pictures when the light is right, but early morning and late afternoon, when picture-taking is best, are when it's the coldest.

I've been giving more thought as to what I should do and where I should go for the Christmas and New Year's holidays, and it's shaping up to look like my biggest problem is staying fairly close to the Pima County fairground in Tucson, so that I can see some of my favorite events in January.

I don't normally go driving around just to be killing time, figuring that with the age and miles that are on my truck and the fact that it's been hauling RVs of some sort ever since I bought it, I don't need to put the kind of miles on it I used to when it was young and healthy. And that means I don't want to drive 400 miles to a place like Quartzsite to turn around in a couple of weeks and go hundreds of miles back to Tucson for the events I want to watch.

So I'm trying to figure a way to stay fairly close to Tucson to spend the holidays in a place that doesn't cost too much, is fairly lenient on how long I can stay, and, most importantly, is a place I enjoy being; I feel that at my age life is too short to waste a precious day being somewhere I don't want to be. I've got some ideas for accomplishing all that, and  will probably write about them tomorrow.

Some of the boondocking spots at the City of Rocks are large enough for big RVs, but there could be a problem turning them around, or getting large RVs leveled up properly.

There's more than one boondocking site at the City of Rocks where having a giant boulder fall on top of you is not as remote as you might hope.

There are four or five restrooms scattered around the park near the boondocking areas....At least there near if you're not in a hurry. But if you've got more years behind you than you do ahead, a bicycle would be handy.
