total immersion

My daughter's family had to cancel their trip to North Carolina last week due to my grandson coming down with strep throat on the day they were supposed to leave. he was feeling a lot better yesterday after taking some prescription medicine so they drove up the road a few miles to a little tourist town named Georgetown which was a well known silver mining town back in the 1850s.

The silver strike has long since played out and now the town is most famous for its narrow gauge train and the well-known,  "Georgetown Loop."

The train is still running but it no longer hauls silver ore out of town, the tourists flock to the little narrow gauge and bring a much needed income to Georgetown...as usual it's tourism that saves most of the little mountain towns in Colorado from becoming ghost towns.

I wasn't there, spending my time working on the new propane storage area for the Lance, so my daughter took all these pictures with her cell phone.

Denver's ten-day forecast is still low 80s, mid-70s for highs, and 40s and 50s for lows. So it looks like the Summer temperatures have gone for good, and Fall is well and truly on the way.

I worked on my new propane cubby today and am still trying to remove the glued-in Luan foam sandwich board from the bottom of the cubby. It's taking a while because I have to fight for every square inch of material removed, but it's a good fight knowing that with any luck, I may only have to lift a full propane tank one more time to the lofty height of its normal home.

I think I'll go to Home Depot and buy some conduit to put the propane hose in so I can run it outside the camper. I think that will be the easiest way to do it, but I haven't given it much thought yet, so I'm unsure.

I'm happy I decided to attend the Como narrow gauge railroad open house on September 30 instead of yesterday. Making Como a part of my mini-vacation will give me some nicer pictures of the Fall leaves and maybe even some snow on the mountains. The only downside I can think of is I always look forward to being at the San Luis Lake wildlife area near Alamosa Colorado which is one of those very dark places where it's easy to see and get pictures of the stars and the Milky Way. But I will be there when it's almost a full moon so I won't benefit from all that darkness.... Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

I don't know when I'm leaving Denver, probably sometime in mid to late October. As usual, I'm not making any plans; I just head south, show up, and either find a place to stay or look for another one. But whenever I get there, I'm looking forward to visiting the Bosque Del Apache near Socorro, New Mexico, and living the whole day in the Lance right next to the lake where the majority of the birds are.

I had a great time doing that last winter. I would take a few pictures of the cranes on the lake, step back inside the Lance to look at the photos on the computer, eat a sandwich, and then go outside and take more pictures.

Photographers and birders come from all over the world to visit the Bosque, and I get to live all day in my tiny home right next to all the birds. It's a total immersion in my picture-taking hobby, and I can't wait to do it again.

Clear Creek, runs through the middle of Georgetown and was mined for placer gold in the 1850s, before they discovered silver in the area.

Devils gate Bridge. Notice how the bridge crosses over its own tracks at the bottom of the picture, hence the name, "Georgetown Loop". And the ability to make sharp turns through the mountains is the main reason for the narrow gauge trains.
