Today instead of faraway shots of the Sandhill cranes I'm risking my life getting.... "Up close and personal".
It was a peaceful, relaxing day today; I just did a few odd jobs around the bronco but mostly took it easy and gave some thought to what I'm going to do next.... That thought didn't last long because I quickly decided not to think about it until I feel like going somewhere.
Early next week, I'll have to make a trip to the grocery store here in Ajo. And if you recall, the Ajo grocery store is half groceries, half hardware store, which makes it very convenient for us DIY guys and gals that eat food and also work on our campers.
Normally, when I'm boondocked in Ajo, I drive around or walk around in the desert, but I don't feel that would be safe this close to the border. The news is always talking about all of the drugs and human smugglers crossing the border now, so I don't feel like wandering around in the desert would be a smart thing to do.
Despite what most people think the Mexican government doesn't actually control the border on the Mexican side; the drug cartels do, and have for quite some time. They're better armed than the Federales, and own more politicians. So the drug cartels determine who is going where and when at the American border.
And their plan is pretty smart because of its simplicity. First, flood certain border areas with illegal border crossers, who pay the cartels to be able to cross, so most of the American Border Patrol will be busy babysitting the kids and helping people cross the border illegally, as their boss is ordering them to do.
At the same time, leaving most of the border unprotected on the American side, so the cartels can bring across all the drugs they want, plenty of Mexican criminals to spread the drugs, and MS13 gang members to act as muscle to protect the drug dealers and their territories.
It's a brilliant plan, but it only works because WE LET IT WORK. Everyone knows this is what's going on, but no one is stopping it! Why is no one stopping it? Who's the one in charge that's NOT stopping it? Is it actually who we think it is? Is there a puppet master pulling the strings? Who stands to gain the most money and political power by continuing the chaos on the southern border? Will anyone ever be held responsible for what's happening?
The answer to the last question is obviously no, and as for the rest of the questions, I have no idea, but a wise man once said "you can get the answer to most questions if you follow the money."
Sandhill Cranes like to stand on one leg, I'm not sure why but their balance must be incredible because they can stand like this for hours. I can barely stand like this long enough to get my pants on.
This murderous Sandhill Crane is staring at me while wondering how deep into my chest he can drive that deadly beak.
The daily sunrise trip to search for food.
You tell me how the Sandhill Cranes can spot their mates from a few hundred feet in the air.
Doing their mating dance.
Their mating dance is a mix of the popular dances of the 50s "the stroll" and "the hully gully."
There's three main poses you most often see the Sandhill cranes in. One is flying, the other two are, standing on one leg, or laying on the ground with their head tucked under their wing.
