I had an easy drive this morning to Lathrop state Park in Walsenburg Colorado and got here just about lunchtime. I had to put Plan "B" into affect because there was still no visible effort to get the water turned on in the campground at Storie Lake.
The Lathrop state Park campground is fairly empty so I had many spots to choose from and I decided to get an electric site for a change. it's still pretty chilly around here and having electric heat instead of burning up my propane will be a nice change of pace.
While I was paying for my campsite I told the Ranger that I had just come from Storie Lake State Park in New Mexico, and she said she had heard that New Mexico parks were having some financial troubles and they were thinking of closing some of the state parks. I sure hope that's not the case but it does go along with the Ranger at Storie Lake telling me there was no money to fix the dumpsite.
I paid for two nights because I wanted to check out Walsenburg and see what goes on there. I've driven through Walsenburg several times but I've never actually stopped. I saw a lot of old buildings as I drove through town on the way to Lathrop State Park and it has a rundown look about it. It's farming and ranching country around here and from what I could tell not much else. Walsenburg is on the main road to get to the Sand Dunes National Monument so they might get a little tourist business from that.
I hope I haven't made a mistake coming back to Colorado this early because for the last week I've had the kind of weather that would normally push me South. I'm hoping it was all caused by a spring storm and now that that's gone summer will be here..... Yeah right!
