what I learned on my trip

Rocky Mountain National Park

After I returned from my Rocky Mountain National Park trip, I completely forgot to write about what I learned on my trip about traveling in the Lance. Since I made that mini-vacation for three different reasons I just forgot to write about what I learned about one of those reasons.

I went there primarily to escape the heat in Denver, and that was successful since it was fairly chilly in the Park. I also wanted to go somewhere I could take some pictures, and the park worked out perfectly for that with the only downside being, the Park is so beautiful there's no one to blame the quality of my pictures on but myself. And the final reason was to call the trip a shakedown cruise, and determine how well the Lance worked and what were its shortcomings. And that's what I forgot to write about.

First of all I got about 16 miles to the gallon of diesel fuel, which was about 1 mile per gallon less than I got with the little Bronco. I thought the mileage would be worse than that because the front of the camper sets up so high, but I'm not paying too much attention to the mileage on this trip since about 90% of my miles were uphill and down, so I'm not going to pay any attention to the mileage until I get on some flat-lands, and a lower altitude.

The refrigerator did marginally well. It kept the temperatures in the mid-40°, and the only time I saw it in the high 30s was when I woke up in the morning and the outside temperature was in the 40s. Like I said, this is marginal as far as I'm concerned which is why I'm putting fans in the refrigerator. The refrigerator's pilot light went out several times, and I'm blaming that on the altitude, so I'll have to keep an eye on that once I get down to a more reasonable altitude.

The truck did well toting the Lance up and down the mountains, meaning that, the transmission and water temperature stayed well within normal ranges, and I don't think the truck would've done nearly as well pulling the Arctic Fox up and down those steep hills. The truck handled pretty much the same way it does empty, except I had to take the turns slower. So I have mentally scratched off any future concerns I may have about taking the Lance into the mountains.
