Where the action is

If you're thinking of a New Year's resolution that's a lot easier than losing weight, or stopping drinking, consider always clicking the pics.

Boondocking at Dome Rock in my teeny tiny home. I don't boondock here very often because it's usually too crowded because of its popularity with the dirt-bike and 4 x 4 crowd. I will most often be at the Plumosa road boondocking area because of fewer people, and its proximity to the Walmart in Parker.

Another peaceful night's sleep at Dome Rock boondocking area in Quartzsite, Arizona. It rained a little last night, and now there's supposed to be more on the way. But when you're living out west, it's downright blasphemous to complain about rain. Everything is so dry I don't think people would complain if their RV were being swept away by a wall of water in a dry wash.... They would probably say, "too bad about the RV, but we sure need the moisture."

Northern Arizona is getting some snow, but fortunately, I'm not in northern Arizona, and it's in the 60s in Quartzsite. I haven't decided yet, and I probably won't until the last minute, but I might spend New Year's in Quartzsite. I've considered Yuma but it can be crowded this time of year since some folks wait in Yuma until after the holidays are over and then head to Quartzsite for the Big Show, which this year is on January 21 through January 29. And I know that because those dates are when I want to ensure I'm nowhere near Quartzsite... It's just waaaay too crowded.

Quartzsite is a tiny town, and when you have a tiny town that suddenly has a quarter of a million people visiting, it can mean long lines at restaurants, gas stations, and every other business that serves the public. But the saving grace is there's always plenty of room for people to boondock.

Now I realize that a lot of people like the crowds, and want to be a part of it, after all look at how many people are in RV parks as opposed to boondocking. And they may even come to the Big Show to be where the action is. But I'm just the opposite; I look for where the action is and then run fast and far in the other direction.

Dome rock boondocking area. There used to be a mine halfway up the hill. But like everything else in Quartzsite the gold rush went bust until RVers came along... And they came along by the thousands for the free boondocking in a warm desert environment.

When I heard these geese flying over at dawn, it reminded me of Sandhill Cranes and it really made me want to get down to Whitewater Draw to visit all of the Cranes that are wintering there; which I will probably do after the rodeo in Tucson.
