Why don't air conditioners quit working in the winter ?

Not much going on today; it's still fairly hot in the low 90s, but at least there's not any high 90s forecast for the next ten days, so maybe we're done with the hot weather for this summer.

The air conditioning thermostat at my daughter's house decided to quit working this morning, causing no air conditioning on a 90° day. I've generally found that air conditioners quit working on hot days and seldom have problems when it's ten below zero. You would think that air conditioners would sometimes quit when it's freezing cold outside because then it wouldn't be so darned inconvenient for everyone.

These temperatures, of course, don't bother me, I live without air conditioning, so I'm used to it, but apparently, no one else is, so something had to be done immediately.

 I went to the hardware store, bought a new thermostat, and installed it before the house got too hot. So far, it's working, but that could mean the thermostat is waiting for the temperature to get over 100° before it goes poof again and lets all the magic smoke out of the wires.

It looks like my grandson had rather stare at a cell phone with a dead battery, than listen to grandpa whining about how easy kids have it now days.
